Oak Park to Midway and O'Hare

From this village the nearer airport is Midway, which is unusual for the towns we cover. The distance is about 9.5 miles by road from the middle of the village. The short line heads east on Washington Boulevard or Madison Street to Cicero Avenue and follows Cicero south to the terminal at 55th Street. When the surface streets are slow, the chauffeur takes the Eisenhower east and exits at Cicero instead.

O'Hare is about 14.7 miles to the main terminal core. Two lines work. One goes north on Harlem Avenue or 1st Avenue toward Grand Avenue and Mannheim Road, then around to the terminal roadway. The other rides the Eisenhower west to the Tri-State and comes into the airport from the south. Which one wins depends on the hour, and on whether the Tri-State is backed up at the Eisenhower junction. Terminal 5 has a separate entrance on the east side of the field and is a few miles shorter than Terminals 1–3.

Green Line, Blue Line, UP-W, or a car at the curb

Oak Park has more rail than almost any suburb. The Green Line ends at Harlem and Lake and also stops at Oak Park Avenue and Ridgeland. The Blue Line's Forest Park branch runs down the middle of the Eisenhower with stops at Harlem, Oak Park Avenue and Austin. Metra's Union Pacific West line stops downtown by Marion Street. For a commute to the Loop, those trains are hard to beat and we won't pretend otherwise.

A car earns its keep in other situations. The Blue Line does reach O'Hare, but from Oak Park it means riding into the city, changing trains and riding all the way back out. Doing that with two checked bags and kids is a long morning. Midway has no one-seat train ride from Oak Park either. Groups heading to a late show find the trains thin out by the time the curtain comes down. That is the work we do: early flights, heavy luggage, and nights that end after transit gets sparse.

OPRF and Fenwick prom rides

Oak Park and River Forest High School sits on Scoville Avenue across from the park, and Fenwick is on Washington Boulevard a few blocks south. Both send big groups out on prom night. A Sprinter takes 12 or 14 friends to photos, dinner and the dance in one vehicle. The party bus handles a larger group that wants to stay together. Pickup and drop-off times are agreed in advance, the chauffeur keeps to the plan the parents signed off on, and there is no alcohol for minors on board.

Unity Temple, Cheney Mansion and Oak Park wedding days

A wedding here often uses two or three buildings in one day. Frank Lloyd Wright's Unity Temple on Lake Street hosts ceremonies. Cheney Mansion, run by the Park District, has a garden and a ballroom that suit receptions. Pleasant Home, the Nineteenth Century Club and the Carleton Hotel on Marion Street come up often as well. On a day like that the Sprinter carries the wedding party from house to ceremony to photos, and an SUV or sedan handles the parents or the couple's getaway.

Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio groups

Visitors come from all over the world to see the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio at Chicago and Forest Avenues, the blocks of Wright and Prairie School houses around it, and the Hemingway birthplace on Oak Park Avenue. Tour groups, alumni trips and conference side outings often fly into O'Hare, stay downtown, and want a day in Oak Park without hunting for parking on narrow residential streets.

A Sprinter solves that. The chauffeur drops the group near the tour start, waits off the busiest blocks, and picks everyone up for lunch downtown on Lake Street or a ride back to the Loop. Walking-tour days in the historic district are also when the streets around Forest Avenue get crowded, so a planned drop point beats circling.

Housewalks, festivals and farmers market Saturdays

Some weekends in Oak Park are much busier than others, and it helps to know them before you book. The Wright Plus housewalk in May brings visitors from far away to tour private homes that are rarely open. A Day in Our Village in June fills Scoville Park with booths for local groups. The farmers market runs on Saturday mornings from late spring into the fall, and in summer the Oak Park Festival Theatre stages plays outdoors in Austin Gardens.

On those days side streets fill with parked cars and a few blocks get closed. We plan around it: a drop point a block or two from the crowd, a pickup spot agreed by text, and a chauffeur who waits nearby instead of circling Lake Street. If you are hosting guests from out of town for one of these weekends, a single Sprinter for the group is far easier than a row of rideshares arriving at different times.

River Forest, Forest Park, Berwyn and Cicero

Oak Park's borders are busy ones. River Forest sits across Harlem to the west, with Dominican and Concordia universities close by. Forest Park is to the southwest, with the Blue Line terminal and the Madison Street restaurants. Berwyn and Cicero lie south of the Eisenhower, and both are closer still to Midway. Plenty of trips start in one of these towns and end in another: a rehearsal dinner in Forest Park, a ceremony in Oak Park, a reception in Berwyn. One booking can cover the whole day, with each stop listed in order.

Lake, Madison, Harlem and the Eisenhower

Lake Street and Madison Street carry most traffic east to west. Harlem Avenue is the western edge, shared with River Forest and Forest Park, and Austin Boulevard is the line with Chicago to the east. North Avenue caps the village at the top and the Eisenhower cuts along the south side. Downtown Oak Park around Lake and Marion is compact and busy in the evening, so the chauffeur may wait around the corner and call rather than block the street.
