From the middle of Elmwood Park, O'Hare is about 10–11 miles by road to Terminals 1–3 (about 7 to Terminal 5). The straight-line number people quote is shorter, but a car can't fly over the forest preserves and the Des Plaines River. The usual start is Grand Avenue west to River Road. From there your chauffeur either follows Lawrence Avenue and Mannheim Road around to the terminal roadway or picks up I-190 into the airport, depending on what the expressway signs and the traffic app say that morning.

Terminal 5, the international terminal, is its own building on the east side of the field with a separate road in, and that is why it is the shorter trip from here. Terminals 1, 2 and 3 share the upper-level departures curb. Tell us the airline and the flight number when you book, not only "O'Hare", and the car goes to the right door. For arrivals we follow the flight, so a late landing moves the pickup with it.

Midway is about 13 miles away. The common line runs down Harlem Avenue to the Eisenhower, then south on Cicero Avenue to the terminal at 55th Street. Very early or very late, the Stevenson can be the better way even though it adds distance. We don't publish a door-to-curb minute count for either airport, because the Kennedy, the Tri-State and Harlem each have bad days that no average captures. Conti Parkway, Grand Avenue and the Metra line

Elmwood Park is a little under two square miles of brick bungalows and two-flats, with Harlem Avenue on its east edge and North Avenue along the south. Most people give us the same landmark: the Conti Parkway circle with its fountain, the Village Hall and the shops around it. It works as a meeting point for a group, it has room to pull over on a quiet morning, and every chauffeur we send already knows it.

Grand Avenue runs through the village on a diagonal and is the road we use most, both for O'Hare and for the drive toward the city. Belmont, Fullerton and Thatcher handle local trips. The Elmwood Park stop on Metra's Milwaukee District West line is a straight ride to Union Station, and for one person with a backpack it is a good deal. It stops working when you have four suitcases and a toddler, when you need to be at Terminal 3 before the first train, or when a group of twelve is coming home from a show after the last one has left.

Also Montclare, Galewood and Dunning

Cross Harlem Avenue and you are in Chicago, but for a pickup it hardly matters. Montclare and Galewood sit right across the line, and the Milwaukee District West trains stop at Mont Clare and Galewood stations on the way downtown. Dunning is a short drive north, up toward Belmont and Irving Park Road. Families on the Chicago side of Harlem book the same airport runs, weddings and prom nights as their neighbors in the village, so we treat those blocks as part of home.
