Harwood Heights to O'Hare: about 9 miles by road

Measured from the middle of the village, the O'Hare terminal core is about 9.0 miles by car, even though the runways look much closer on a map. The drive has to swing around the field. Most mornings the chauffeur takes Lawrence Avenue west across Cumberland and River Road to Mannheim Road, then follows the airport roads to departures. When Lawrence is torn up or the lights are stacking, Harlem Avenue north to the Kennedy and then the I-190 spur is the other way in. The international terminal, Terminal 5, is the shorter trip of the two because it has its own entrance on the east side of the airport.

Midway is about 15.6 miles. A sensible line goes east on Lawrence to Central Avenue, south to Grand, and then down Cicero Avenue to 55th Street. The Kennedy into the city and the Stevenson back out can be quicker late at night, even though it looks roundabout on paper.

You won't see a minutes figure next to those miles. Rush hour on Harlem near the Kennedy ramps and a snowy morning on Cicero make any single number misleading. A small village on the Lawrence Avenue corridor

Harwood Heights covers well under a square mile and is home to roughly 9,000 people. Together with Norridge it forms a pocket of suburbs completely ringed by the city of Chicago. The main business strip is on Harlem Avenue, a short way south of the Kennedy and the Harlem Blue Line station, and Lawrence Avenue is the working street through the middle, lined with shops, bakeries and restaurants. Many Norwood Park households fly out of O'Hare often, and from Harwood Heights next door the airport is about 9.0 road miles. People usually ask whether the Blue Line at Harlem is good enough. For one traveler with a carry-on, it is. For a family with checked bags and an early departure, a car at the door removes the walk, the platform wait and the hauling of suitcases up the stairs at the airport end. Midway is about 15.6 miles from Harwood Heights; from Norwood Park the usual line runs down Northwest Highway and Central Avenue toward Cicero.

Dunning: Wright College, Eli's and Forest Preserve Drive

Dunning lies south of Harwood Heights and reaches down toward Irving Park Road. Wilbur Wright College sits at Montrose and Narragansett, and Eli's Cheesecake has its bakery and cafe on Forest Preserve Drive. The rest is mostly residential streets, with forest preserve land along Forest Preserve Drive. Measured from Harwood Heights next door, O'Hare is about 9.0 miles by road and Midway about 15.6.
