Norridge to O'Hare, and the long way to Midway

People ask this more than anything else. From the center of Norridge the O'Hare terminal core is about 8.2 miles on real roads, because the drive has to go around the airfield and finish on the airport's own loop. Terminal 5 is closer, a few miles shorter, since its entrance is on the east side facing the village.

The everyday line leaves on Lawrence Avenue or Montrose Avenue, heads west to Cumberland Avenue, and joins I-190 for the final run into the terminals. On a bad morning on the Kennedy the chauffeur stays on Lawrence out past River Road and comes in along Mannheim Road instead. Either way you are on the airport ring road quickly, which is the whole appeal of living here if you fly a lot.

Midway is the far airport: about 17.4 miles. The route drops south on Cumberland and Thatcher to the Eisenhower, runs east, then follows Cicero Avenue down to 55th Street. Build in extra room for it on weekday afternoons. We don't post minute estimates for either trip. Pickups at the HIP and along Harlem

The Harlem Irving Plaza, everyone here just says the HIP, is the retail center of Norridge. It dates to the 1950s and still pulls shoppers from across the Northwest Side. Its lots run along Harlem Avenue and Forest Preserve Drive, and on a December Saturday the entrances back up well onto Harlem.

That makes it a handy meeting point on a weekday and a slow one on a holiday weekend. If your group is meeting at the HIP, tell us which side and which store, and we will pick a spot at the edge of the lot where the chauffeur can pull in without joining the line. For a Saturday in December we may suggest meeting a block off Harlem instead.

Ridgewood prom, homecoming and team trips

Ridgewood High School on Montrose Avenue is the only school in District 234. It serves parts of Norridge, Harwood Heights and unincorporated Norwood Park Township. Prom and homecoming are the big nights. A group of 12 or 14 fits in a Sprinter, and the party bus takes the bigger crowd that wants to arrive together. Parents agree the times with us beforehand, the chauffeur sticks to that plan, and there is no alcohol for minors on board. The prom page lists the ground rules.

The Rebels also travel. Club teams and families book a Sprinter for weekend tournaments, and away games against nearby schools send carloads of fans across the area. Lawrence, Montrose and the roads out of the village

Norridge and Harwood Heights together form a small island surrounded by Chicago. Norridge was incorporated in 1948, and its name borrows from Norwood Park and Park Ridge. It is mostly single-family streets, crossed east to west by Lawrence Avenue and Montrose Avenue and split by Harlem Avenue, with Cumberland Avenue close by to the west. There is no expressway exit inside the village, so almost every trip starts by getting to Cumberland, River Road or the Kennedy.

Transit here is buses. There is no Metra stop in Norridge, and the nearest Blue Line stations are up along the Kennedy at Harlem and Cumberland. That is fine for a commuter headed downtown. It is not much help for a 5:30 a.m. flight with a family of five and their suitcases.

Norridge taxi, rideshare or a booked chauffeur

We are not a meter taxi and we don't cruise for street hails. Rides are booked ahead with Book now or by phone, so the car and the driver are set before you go to bed. For a short hop that you decide on at the last minute, an app ride may suit you better, and that is fine.

A booked chauffeur is the better call when timing matters. An airport pickup is tracked to the actual landing, a group stays in one vehicle, and a wedding or funeral follows a schedule written down ahead of time. Our base is in Elmwood Park, a short drive south down Harlem or Cumberland, and dispatch answers around the clock.

Rosemont, downtown and the United Center

Rosemont is a short drive northwest. Concerts at Allstate Arena, dinner at Parkway Bank Park, or a trade show at the convention center all make easy group trips from Norridge. Downtown is a longer ride on the Kennedy, and a Sprinter saves a group from paying for three parking garages in River North. Games and concerts at the United Center are the other regular request, especially when everyone wants to leave together after the final whistle.

Out-of-town relatives who come in for a wedding or a graduation often book rooms at the hotels near O'Hare in Rosemont, because they are close to both the airport and your house. We can collect them at the terminal, drop them at the hotel, bring them to the party in Norridge on Saturday and take them back to their flight on Sunday. List each leg when you book and dispatch keeps it on one schedule.
