The city sits on O'Hare's east flank. From the center of town the terminal core is about 4 miles away in a straight line and about 8.6 miles by road, because the last leg runs on the airport's own ring roads. The usual line is Touhy Avenue west toward Mannheim Road, or Cumberland Avenue south to the Kennedy and then I-190 into the terminals. From the Maine South end of town, Devon Avenue over to Higgins Road is often the shorter start.
Midway is the long airport for Park Ridge: about 16 miles straight-line and 18.6 by the shortest road route, which stays on surface streets (Central Avenue south, then Cicero Avenue down to 55th Street). At quiet hours the expressways can win even though they add miles. That version takes the Tri-State (I-294) south to the Stevenson (I-55) and comes up Cicero Avenue to the terminal. Traffic sets the clock on this run more than distance does: a lane closure on the Kennedy or a snowy Friday in February changes the whole trip. Most Park Ridge evenings we run start in Uptown, where Prospect Avenue crosses Northwest Highway beside the Metra tracks. The Pickwick Theatre, the art deco movie house on Prospect, is the landmark people give us, and it makes an easy meeting point for a dinner-and-a-film group or a birthday that begins with drinks nearby. Uptown curbs are short and the blocks fill up on weekend nights, so the chauffeur may hold on a side street and call rather than double-park in front of the marquee.
The Park Ridge stop on Metra's Union Pacific Northwest line is right there in Uptown, and Dee Road station serves the west side. If you're a solo commuter heading downtown with a laptop bag, the train is hard to beat and we'll say so. It stops making sense for O'Hare with three checked bags at 5 a.m.: there is no one-seat train ride from Park Ridge to the terminals, and you would change to the Blue Line at Jefferson Park. It also stops making sense for a group of ten going to a show that ends after the last train home.
Two District 207 high schools sit inside Park Ridge: Maine South on Dee Road and Maine East near Dempster Street. Prom and homecoming are when most Park Ridge party bus requests arrive, and they arrive early, because spring Saturdays fill up across every school in the area at once. Parents tend to ask us for the same things: a fixed pickup list, a set route with the photo stops written in, and one drop-off point at an agreed time. A party bus suits the groups that outgrow a Sprinter. With a smaller prom group of 12 to 14, a Sprinter is often the better fit, since it is easier to stage in a residential driveway and quicker between photo stops. Advocate Lutheran General Hospital on Dempster Street draws families from well beyond Chicago, and a good share of our Park Ridge airport work looks like this: a son flying into O'Hare to see a parent, a family arriving for a surgery date, relatives heading home after a long week at the bedside. We meet the flight, bring everyone to the hospital's main entrance or to their hotel, and take them back to the airport when they're ready. An SUV handles most of these trips; a Sprinter covers a larger family.
To be plain about it, this is chauffeured car service for visitors and not medical transport. We are not a medical carrier, and a patient who needs a gurney or clinical help on the way should book one.
The private Park Ridge Country Club hosts member weddings and banquets, and the Uptown churches see a steady run of Saturday ceremonies. That layout is why a Park Ridge trip rarely stays inside Park Ridge. It might be dinner in Niles, a show at the Rosemont Theatre, a pickup at the Jefferson Park Transit Center, or a Sunday run to a Des Plaines banquet hall.
